The Italian wrestling broadcasting market is changing, with WWE leaving Sky Sports Italia & moving owed towards Discovery Italy. It was initially announced on July 1st that the WWE terminated their contract with Sky Sports over financial disputes. AEW took the opportunity of WWE’s exit from this broadcaster, making a contract that was announced on July 25th. AEW will air weekly on Sky Sports Italia moving forward.
Discovery Italy obtained a multi-year contract with the WWE, which extended towards live programming & pay-per-views. Commentary will be supported in the original American format on DPlay Plus, with Italian commentary supported through DMAX (Channel 52). The later is more prevalent amongst Italy’s wrestling enthusiasts. The first night of every week will have Monday Night Raw, ending the week off with Friday Night SmackDown. Expect unpredictable drama & parading athletics that are often faked for entertainment purposes. It should be mentioned that NXT will arrive every Thursday on DPlay Plus, without any Italian commentary.
WWE broadcasting on Discovery Italy started weeks ago, seeing notable viewers that were standard with Sky Sports Italia. This means less than a million Italians watching on Monday, Thursday, and Friday. Marketing campaigns on DMAX and DPlay Plus haven’t proved enough to sustain higher viewership numbers.
The Senior Vice President & General Manager of the WWE emphasized that they’re thrilled to start a new historical period of professional wrestling with the Discovery channel. Stefan Kastenmuller professed that the unique free-to-watch business model would inevitably grow WWE’s popularity in America. Stefan hopes this’ll be accomplished by increasing their business relationship with Discovery.
AEW Joining Sky Sports Italia
Contract negotiations with AEW began immediately for Sky Sports Italia. Days after terminating their agreement with the WWE, AEW was informed that Sky Sports was interested in replacing their outdated wrestling program with something more mode. It’d take three weeks for AEW to finalize their contract with Sky Sports Italia, with their first broadcast airing on July 31st. Fans of professional wrestling in Italy can anticipate AEW Dynamite to shock them with unexpected levels of exciting & adrenaline. Notable wrestlers like Chris Jericho, Cody Rhodes, Kenny Omega, and Adam Page compete for the AEW.
